Etsy: John Lennon Solid State AM Radio

Another dose of randomness...

A working class radio is something to be... It's hard to know whether to laugh or cry at this John Lennon radio, produced in 1981 to capitalize on Lennon's death. If his pose looks oddly familiar, it's because it is built on the same frame as an almost identical 1978 Elvis Presley radio.

The heavy plastic figure and base are about 10 inches high. Lettered in gold on the base is "JOHN LENNON 1940-1980." The head and upper body are posable. John is holding a microphone with a white cord and is improbably dressed in a denim leisure suit and pink sparkly turtleneck.

The radio works just fine, and requires a 9V battery. (Though, it is strange to hear John broadcasting a football game.) There is a tuner dial and a volume control/on switch on the side of base. The original box and plastic bubble wrap is included. The box indicates that this is "Model TR 68." A gold sticker on the back of one of John's legs says "Made in Hong Kong." The figure detaches from the base to fit into the box.

The figure and base are in excellent condition. The box was that kind of thin, cheap cardboard that things come in when you buy them on the street in Manhattan, so it shows some wear, but is intact.

An unusual piece to add to your Beatles or radio collection!
