Abbey Road

Stretch of Abbey Road Made Famous By the Beatles Becomes Protected Landmark

A British official said the famous street crossing "is no castle or cathedral but, thanks to the Beatles and a ten minute photo-shoot one August morning in 1969, it has just as strong a claim as any to be seen as part of our heritage."

Haddy Grimble

Randolf's Party (from "In His Own Write" by John Lennon)

It was Chrisbus time but Randolph was alone. Where were all his good pals. Bernie, Dave, Nicky, Alice, Beddy, Freba, Viggy, Nigel, Alfred, Clive, Stan, Frenk, Tom, Harry, George, Harold? psdtuts+: 50 Years of Typography in Album Covers

The Beatles: Sgt. Pepper

This Grammy Award-winning 1967 album cover featured a colorful collage of life-sized cardboard models of famous people on the front of the album cover. It also featured The Beatles themselves in the guise of the Sgt. Pepper band. The idea was to create a scene that showed the Sgt. Pepper band performing in a park. In keeping with the park concept, the foreground of the scene is a floral display incorporating the word "Beatles" spelt out in flowers. It was probably the first time this had been done and it was a landmark album cover that changed it all graphically. Creativity zoomed after that release.

Etsy: John Lennon Solid State AM Radio

Another dose of randomness...

A working class radio is something to be... It's hard to know whether to laugh or cry at this John Lennon radio, produced in 1981 to capitalize on Lennon's death. If his pose looks oddly familiar, it's because it is built on the same frame as an almost identical 1978 Elvis Presley radio.

The heavy plastic figure and base are about 10 inches high. Lettered in gold on the base is "JOHN LENNON 1940-1980." The head and upper body are posable. John is holding a microphone with a white cord and is improbably dressed in a denim leisure suit and pink sparkly turtleneck.

The radio works just fine, and requires a 9V battery. (Though, it is strange to hear John broadcasting a football game.) There is a tuner dial and a volume control/on switch on the side of base. The original box and plastic bubble wrap is included. The box indicates that this is "Model TR 68." A gold sticker on the back of one of John's legs says "Made in Hong Kong." The figure detaches from the base to fit into the box.

The figure and base are in excellent condition. The box was that kind of thin, cheap cardboard that things come in when you buy them on the street in Manhattan, so it shows some wear, but is intact.

An unusual piece to add to your Beatles or radio collection!
